Who We Are

Carla Daufenbach, L.C.S.W., B.C.B., B.C.N.

Robert A. Gorkin, Ph.D. M.D., B.C.B, B.C.N.

We are a small mental health private practice, that specializes in Biofeedback. It started during my undergraduate years doing biofeedback research in the psychology lab. I became fascinated with how you could change things like heart rate or warming your hands using breathing and coaching. After I graduated ( in 1986), I went to work for one of my professors. He had a small private practice in an outpatient orthopedic surgeons office. My professor did the cognitive therapy and I worked as a biofeedback technician. Most of my patients were either pain or anxiety related patients, with some occasional headache patients. I completed my first M.S. in 1990 and start working in the mental health field. I worked with severly mentally ill adults. I learned a lot about mental illness and how it effects not just the patients but also the families and care givers. I eventually went back into private practice. In 2006, I opened my own practice with Dr. Gorkin (he had been my former employer and had retired from full time practice). Now that I had my own practice and Dr. Gorkin was set up in his own part time practice, I decided I wanted to incorporate biofeedback into my psychotherapy.

I started doing research in biofeedback to see how much the field had changed and was not surprised to find, that it was now organized with certification requirements, there was much more clinicial research to support the use of biofeedback for several disorders and conditions and totally different equipment.

Dr. Gorkin  received his undergraduate degree from the University of MN. Following graduation he completed a Ph.D. in Biology from the the Uni. of CA Irvine. He eventually went back to the Uni. of MN and received his M.D. and completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Dr. Gorkin, has always been a minimal medication type doctor. He strongly believes that medication should be use in conjunction with psychotherapy. We discussed implementing biofeedback into the practice. He took his first course/ introduction into the field of biofeedback and I took the course to learn about the different theories and to play with all the new equipement.

We both completed the necessary requirements to get certified by the BCIA in both General Biofeedback and Neurofeedback. While I am the primary biofeedback provider, Dr. Gorkin’s knowledge and understanding helps with the usage of medications when needed and being able to titrate dosage as needed.

We still provided the traditional mental health outpatient practice, but the implementation of biofeedback into the practice has allowed us to provide our patients with more options and better services.
